Strange pain, this fire of the heart
Does it burn me up or quicken me
Towards a melting moment of love
Not felt since time's beginning?

Strange gift, this gentle fire
So easily fanned to raging heat
With a glance or touch or vision
Offering the challenge of conquest.

Strange reward, to find ashes of youth
Still aglow in an aging heart
To discover a yearning for gentleness
In a body so hardened to pain.
