Apropos of bugger all.

February 11th 2008 12:17
My two overfed shit machines doing what they do best.

Today was/is/remains one of those days. "Idly drifting along in rural splendour," is what I would probably answer if asked what I was up to. I wasn't even grumpy today - which is, to be quite honest, something which really only happens if I spend too much time near other human beings. I'm actually quite pleasant when I'm alone. Ask my wife.

It isn't that living on a farm doesn't have its difficulties, it is just that one tends to absorb and attend to such problems at a pace which suits one's nature. For instance, today I was engaged in setting up the reservoir tank for my spring fed water supply. I drilled the hole for the inlet pipe and installed the connector. Tomorrow I will, possibly, connect the pipe. This will depend however on how I feel at the time, whether it is hot, or raining, or windy, or indeed, upon that host of other factors which every farmer knows need to be taken into account before any real work can be attempted.
City dwellers, of course, have no such problems. I was once, for a short time, a city dweller. A kind of denizen of the fringe, nevertheless. No matter how I tried to be something other than a somewhat down to earth yokel, it never washed with the yuppies who lived around us. Shortly after I began trying to decide whether I should, like Arthur Dent, spend five years mad, I decided to leave Melbourne again, this time for good. Now, after a wasted, admittedly self imposed, ten year sentence in (ugh!) Western Oz, I now live in what I believe is the best place in Australia. (Of which I have seen sufficient to make what I believe is a fairly objective judgment)

I suppose you are wondering what the punch line is for this post. I usually have one don't I?

I'm pleased to hear that you're not grumpy today, there's nothing like those wide open spaces, sympathies to your wife,

It's Melbourne that's the best place in Australia? I still haven't been there...!

I wish, like you, I could be content with isolation and the beauty of Nature - but I simply ADORE people and love nothing more than to be surrounded by them with their busy little inane lives, in a coffee shop, overhearing snippets of conversation that are, apropos of nothing... When I moved to Sydney from South Africa, one of the most difficult things for me to understand was how people passed one another without greeting each other. In Africa, you pass someone, you greet them. People looked at me like I was weird when I'd smile and say, 'Hi, how are you?', as if I was about to ask them for money or something... so I've modified this practice somewhat...
But now sometimes when a stranger smiles at me, I get awash with a feeling of connection to all people, despite our strangeness and estrangement from one another and I'm reminded how ridiculously human we all are, after all.

Having left my property in the Snowy Mountains five years ago to Suburban Queensland, to save the life of a dying daughter, I can only yearn for your kind of Apropos.

How I remember the wonderful times of letting the weather decide when I would work or not... free as the wind. However, the goat pen always needed mucking out *chuckle* rain, hail or shine.

I will return to that 'rural splendor' when she has left home.

Count your blessings Grumpy.

Lilla ...

PS Halfway up the Himalayas I visited a holy wise man, to 'chat' for a bit. His advice to me?

If you want to live a long and happy life, stay away from humans. I'm still chuckling, because despite sparodic moments of intense social activity... now in my middle age, I realise he was absolutely right.

Dear Cib,
Scroll to the top of the page, look at the image and read the words thereon.
No - Melbourne is not the best place in OZ - although it isn't the worst either, if you like that sort of thing.

ah, sorry - Tasmania... fantastic.

Plus, you have the added advantage of having the chance to see a Tasmanian Tiger.
