A Long Time Coming
January 5th 2008 13:09
Could have been a long time comin'
And a lot o' TV games and pizza
I could've arrived fat 'n sleepy
An' just fallen down at his feet
I could've saved a lot o' trouble
If I'd just dug in for the time.
So what pushed me, I dunno
To start walkin' the long miles
And gettin' me closer by the minute
To the place no-one wants to go
Could've saved a lot o' trouble
If I'd let him do the travellin'
Seems a long time on the road
Can go in a moment's memory
And you wonder when it started
To seem like a dream passing
Could've saved a lot o' trouble
So what can I carry now
But faded images of love
Faces, places and times all lost
Until empty handed we meet
Could've saved a lot o' trouble
If I'd known he needed nothin'
This road, I dunno, it seems
To have started back aways
Before I had a choice to stay
And just watch the parade
Could've saved a lot o' trouble
Makin' roads an' time an' all.
But some kinda light 'n shade
Seems to make the balance
For sunburnt skin and hardened feet
Like, like water to an arid throat
Maybe makes the trouble worth it
Maybe makes the road his only joy.
